As Oppositelock’s Resident Boat Expert (self-appointed) I declare that boat to be excellent. Although I might want a newer engine before leaving the relative safety of the river.

Is there a name for this size/style of boat?   I want to learn more!

I declare boat 2 to be better than boat 1.

I’d call it a sedan:

Kinja'd!!!

Sort of open but with a covered cockpit. Like, if you had a house on an island and needed to get out there in all kinds of weather, this is perfect. The one you saw looks like a fiberglass model styled to look like the ones in the image above.

Boat 2 has a modern simple electric outboard. It’s not going to be fast but it will be near-silent and very reliable. The old one... uhh none of the above.

Boat 2 is also more of a cuddy cabin type thing, because you’re driving from the outside. Cabin underneath is for... activities.

I also just realized that boat 2 has the wheel on the outside, which makes it more of a cuddy cabin. Small cabin for “activities” with the driving position being out in the elements.

There’s a company (companies?) that are starting to rent out retro boats in the midwest. In Milwaukee you can rent one of those for a measly  $200 for 2 hours.

I cringe at the thought of how much money was sunk into those holes in the water. very They are  cool, though.

Isn’t boat 1 driven from outside as well? Looks like some sort of wheel in front of the right seat (though much more horizontal than boat 2)?

I’m assuming these are rentals since there are 2 of them, so probably a relatively reliable engine . Milwaukee has a retro boat rental company too. It’s not cheap though.

They look like they must have spent a large portion of their lives in covered, dry storage. But also yes. And yes.

I had a boat with a storage area up in the bow, not a “cabin” although there was a hatch you could open, and of all things, a cupholder in there. AND the light that was up there could be switched off from inside. So maybe they thought humans could function or sleep up there. I can say only that umm, my wife and I tried to make use of that space one time, and uhh only once. Many awkward. Much not work. Not like.

But you can see the boat was shaped VERY differently:

I hear you, but a s expensive as boats can be to maintain if you use them regularly then they’re still a much better option than this.

We figured that over the 2 years we owned our last boat, minus consumables , it only cost us ~ $20 00 for A LOT of time on the water.

I find the people who complain loudest about the cost of owning a boat tend to be those people who use it a few times a year.

Totally agree. It’s exactly  those people who only use their boats occasionally who would be best off renting. Or being a part of one of those boat clubs that has a variety of boats you can use, for a flat annual fee or whatever.

Is that a 4hp trolling motor on boat 2? It’s tiny.

Aside from the engine there’s not much to boats like this.

Fiberglass repair and wood stringer replacement is devastatingly ex pensive work to have to done on a boat. Replacement parts that don’t exist anymore for things like those control systems are likely to have eye- watering prices when they can be found at all.

There’s no cabin in there, that hatch just slides forward (or up)  so you can access the cleats on the bow. You won’t be able to stand on the bow either, as its just unsupported fiberglass. The full tank is probably in the bow as well. My ‘69 Chris Craft was of similar design.

I’m well aware. It’s possible these boats never had to deal with rot, even as old as they are.

When I kept my boat at a marina, it was always the same boats that we’d see out being used. The others never seemed to go anywhere. I saw the same with airplanes when I worked in operations at our local regional airport.

Unless you regularly use something as maintenance heavy as boats and airplanes are, there’s absolutely no way to justify the expense. I just don’t get those people.
